About Mingo Wildlife Area

Mingo Wildlife Area spans approximately 21,000 acres in southeastern Missouri, situated in Wayne County near the town of Puxico. The area consists of bottomland hardwood forests, extensive wetlands, sloughs, slough lakes, swamps, and upland areas. Created by the Missouri Department of Conservation in the 1940s, Mingo was developed as a refuge and management area for migratory waterfowl, particularly ducks and geese, making it one of the state's premier waterfowling destinations. The area is part of the larger Mississippi Flyway, attracting a diversity of migratory birds each year. Visitors to the area can explore numerous dikes, levees, and water control structures that support the complex ecosystem. The landscape also supports white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beaver, and other wildlife species. Recreational activities include waterfowl and deer hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, paddling through designated waterways, and photography. Mingo Wildlife Area features several accessible trails and designated wildlife watching platforms. The nearby Castor River flows through part of the area, contributing to its rich aquatic habitats. The area’s remote and tranquil setting provides an excellent environment for birders and nature enthusiasts seeking diverse wildlife experiences in a predominantly forested wetland environment.
