Mingo Wildlife Area spans approximately 21,000 acres in southeastern Missouri, situated in Wayne County near the town of Puxico. The area consists of bottomland hardwood forests, extensive wetlands, sloughs, slough lakes, swamps, and upland areas. Created by the Missouri Department of Conservation in the 1940s, Mingo was developed as a refuge and management area for migratory waterfowl, particularly ducks and geese, making it one of the state's premier waterfowling destinations. The area is part of the larger Mississippi Flyway, attracting a diversity of migratory birds each year. Visitors to the area can explore numerous dikes, levees, and water control structures that support the complex ecosystem. The landscape also supports white-tailed deer, wild turkey, beaver, and other wildlife species.
